8k31 Wired.. Fish Fingers All In a Line

So. Wire. Quite possibly one of the greatest bands ever to grace this earth. This seminal post punk band that brought art to the punk scene are now 40 years old. I can tell you that this anniversary does not fill me with a carefree youthful vigour, but it does give me a sense of rightfulness.. I loved this band from the get go, they showed me what punk had made possible..
So. I will take this opportunity to play a few tunes from their first three LPs – Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, 154 – plus some contemporaries from those three years – ’77 to ’79 – with a closing including some later Wire material (I extend only to 2013’s Change Becomes Us).. one or two examples of Colin Newman’s and Gilbert & Lewis’s side projects also included.. a quote from a recent interview with Newman sets the scene : “There were bits of newness around. The first Buzzcocks EP, Spiral Scratch, was way ahead of anything else. It was stark and minimalist, very hard to understand or decode. When Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks, I thought, “We’ve got the field to ourselves.” The Pistols were just a rock band, in the end. By 1977, it was time to go on to the next thing. People were excited by the energy of punk, but wanted to do something original with it, and in that way, Wire were a post-punk band.”
